Work
nears finish on Douglas Road
MIRAMAR--Workers
are putting the finishing touches on the Douglas Road widening project in
Miramar that started more than three years ago.
The 1.5-mile stretch of roadway between the Miami-Dade County line and Pembroke
Road was widened from two to four lanes. The Broward County project included
other road improvements such as lighting, landscaping, irrigation, sidewalks,
bike lanes and a median.
The county expects completion by mid-August.
"There are just a few items to go, including a drawing that shows the
location of the underground water and sewer lines," said George Edwards, a
Broward project manager. "This would be for future use and as a permanent
record."
The $6.3 million project began in April 2001.That total includes design,
construction and inspection costs.
All four lanes have been open to vehicles since September, but workers have
continued with other aspects of the project.
Edwards said increased traffic volumes triggered the need for the road
expansion.
"It turned out well and the landscaping looks real nice," he said.
